Beuttler, Edward Gerald Oakley (1880 - 1964)

Beuttler first went to sea in 1896 and joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1898 as a midshipman, rising to the rank of lieutenant in 1914 and later wing-commander. Before and during the First World War he contributed cartoons, many with a nautical flavour, to the Bystander, Punch, Sketch and Winter's Pie. He was also a regular contributor to the Tatler. He is most commonly seen in pen and wash, occasionally in colour, and his animated style owes much to H M Bateman. Some of his cartoons were also produced as sets of postcards by The Syren & Shipping Ltd. The Daily Sketch said of him: 'Beuttler is to the Navy what Bruce Bairnsfather is to the Army.' He married the actress Isabel May Roddick in 1908.
