Printed above cartoon: Front bench gaiety girls by Cummings (after Beveley Baxter, M.P.)
(8 March 1949: "Mr Beverley Baxter, MP for Wood Green, who was adopted as prospective candidate for the new Parliamentary division of Southgate, said that the Conservatives were putting their case to the public badly. Many members of the Opposition front bench in Parliament were largely responsible. The policy of allowing members who held office in previous Governments to lead debates to the exclusion of more capable men was wrong. "Let the men who can do the job and who know what they are speaking about occupy the front bench," said Mr Baxter. "They would shock a lot of these Gaiety girls sitting on the front bench.")
