The label on the trunk reads: ‘Contribution from the Jewish population of Germany’. Depicted on the left is Hermann Goering, who amassed a personal fortune from the confiscation of Jewish property. The shooting dead on 7 November of Ernst vom Rath, a diplomat at the German Embassy in Paris, by Herschel Grynszpan, a seventeen-year-old Polish Jew, served as the excuse for Kristallnacht.
