Smirnov studied at Moscow and Leningrad art schools. He graduated from Moscow Art College. He is one of the great Russian cartoonists of the 1970s and 1980s and is featured in Tim Benson's history of the Cold War, Drawing the Curtain. Since 1970, he has also painted canvasses, and worked as mosaic layer, interior designer, as well as caricaturist and illustrator for various newspapers, magazines and books.
