Elderman was the editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post throughout the 1930s and early 1940s. He was born in Helena, Montana in 1910, where his father was a farmer, and grew up in Ashland, Kentucky with his mother, where he came to be known as Eugene. He worked as a civil engineer in a steel mill before he joined the Washington Post in 1932, having previously worked as an animator. His colleagues knew him as "Geneo." He left the Washington Post in 1942 to serve in the U.S. Army. He was a cartoonist for the Office of War Information's "Victory" magazine. After the Second World War, he was replaced at the Washington Post by Herblock whose first cartoon was published there on 3 January 1946.
