On 3 November, Tim Benson went on to the BBC Daily Politics programme to promote Britain’s Best Political Cartoons 2017 but was ambushed on the subject of gender bias within political cartooning. Journalists Rachel Shabi and Ian Martin joined the debate but only displayed their total ignorance on the subject of political cartoons. Martha Richler ‘Marf’ who drew briefly for the Evening Standard was introduced to focus on gender rather than celebrate the great political cartoonists we have in this country. She didn’t help her case, when asked what made a great political cartoon replied: “they need to be funny!” I would personally like to see more women taking up political cartooning and giving the men a run for their money.
