Smythe, Reg (1917 - 1998)

Smythe, Reg (1917 - 1998)

Smythe’s ‘Andy Capp’ character began to appear in the Daily Mirror’s northern edition in 1957, quickly becoming a strip and spreading to the other editions. Andy Capp became a stage musical and an ITV series, adapted by Keith Waterhouse. His creator said Andy Capp was ‘a horrible little man, but he’s been very good to Reg’. When Smythe died, Andy Capp had been syndicated to 1,700 newspapers in 51 countries and translated into 14 languages.
