Ross Lewis began his career as a commercial artist and did the layouts for a prize-winning civic promotion campaign for the Milwaukee Journal before becoming the newspaper's editorial cartoonist in 1929. In 1935, Ross won the Pulitzer Prize for editortial cartooning for his cartoon "California Points with Pride!" in the Baltimore Sun. He retired from the Milwaukee Journal in 1967.
