Searle, Ronald (1920 - 2011)

Ronald Searle original cartoon artwork.

Captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore, Ronald Searle was a prisoner of war from 1942 to 1945, spending seven months labouring on the infamous Burma-Siam railway. On his return to Britain Searle began to work as a political cartoonist for Tribune, the Daily Herald and the Sunday Express as well as the theatre artist for Punch. Apart from drawing political cartoons for Punch, he also re-introduced caricatures to the humorous magazine after a hiatus of many years, including the famous ‘Heroes of Our Time’ series. Searle’s most memorable creations include the St Trinian’s schoolgirls and Nigel Molesworth.
