McClelland, James (1901 - 1976)

Born in Tamworth, New South Wales, James McClelland joined the Northern Daily Leader in 1928 as its first political cartoonist. The Leader was in fact the first provincial paper in Australia to employ a political cartoonist. In a personal memoir, McClelland said that “joining the Leader was a wise decision.” “During my long stay (he left in 1949) there were many great world changes and upheavals,” says McClelland. Two months after joining the Leader, McClelland’s cartoons became so popular that the management decided to publish them every day. During his visits back to Sydney he also developed a friendship with the leading Bulletin cartoonist, Ted Scorfield, who “gave me many valuable hints” about drawing political cartoons.
