Erwin Hess was the editorial cartoonist for the Milwaukee Journal. He was also a comic book artist for Dell Publications from 1939 throughout the 1940s. He was also the artist of the "Captain Midnight" newspaper strip from 1942 to 1945. In 1947, he started his cartoon series "The Good Old Days," which he illustrated until 1981. During 1940-1942, he did the interior artwork for the three Shadow titles by Better Little Books: The Shadow and the Living Death, The Shadow and the Master of Evil and The Shadow and the Ghost Makers.
